Nothing screams amateur like product photography on a web site or catalogue with poorly illuminated images of a company’s product line, or a fuzzy photograph used as an illustration in a technical document .
Modern digital camera technology is amazing, but the quality of the images relies on more than point-and-shoot capability. Key factors are:
- Lighting - Was the illustration photography done with a built-in flash, leaving harsh shadows? Was the building photography done in mid-day when outdoor light takes on a cold blue cast?
- Composition - Were ‘strong diagonals’ included in the product’s photograph to draw the eye to the subject? (Look at the keyboard photo above). Was the Rule of Thirds used when photographing head office, or did the empty sky occupy three quarters of the shot?
- Exposure - Were some parts of the illustration’s photograph in shadow while other parts were bleached out? What part of the object did the camera’s metering measure when determining exposure?
- Background - Was the product photographed on a piece of bristol board from the Dollar Store or against a proper photographic backdrop?
Great product and illustration photography rarely occurs by accident, so plan for success. Experienced professional photographers understand the importance of these concepts, and how to use them to advantage.
